What Pets does
Pets looks after your pet. It's made for hunters and warlocks.
- It shows your pet's mood, food and stats in one window.
- It tells you when your pet is hungry and gives you a button to feed it.
- It warns you when you're running low on pet food.
- It shows what a beast will teach you before you tame it.
- The Pet Compendium lists every beast you can tame, where it lives and how fast it attacks.
- An arrow can lead you to the beast you want.
How to open it
- Type /bpet or /pets.
- Or click the paw button on your minimap. Right-click it to open Settings.
- You can drag the minimap button around the edge of the minimap.
- Press Escape to close any Pets window.
The pets window
This is the main window. It shows your pet's details, one line each. With no pet out, it says "No pet out."
| Line | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Pet | Its name, family and level |
| Happiness | Happy, Content or Unhappy, and how much damage it does in that mood (hunters) |
| Loyalty | Its loyalty level, and whether it's rising or falling (hunters) |
| Experience | How close it is to the next level |
| Training points | Points free to spend, and how many you've used (hunters) |
| Eats | The kinds of food it likes, like Meat or Fish (hunters) |
| Food | The best food in your bags for it, and how many you have. It says when you're running low |
| Health, Attack speed, Damage, Attack power, Armor | Your pet's fighting stats |
| Resistances | Only shows when your pet has some |
Warlocks see the demon's name, experience and fighting stats. Hunger and food lines are just for hunters.
The Feed button at the bottom feeds your pet the best food you have. It picks food that fills your pet the most first. It uses your cheapest good food so better food lasts. Food that gives a buff is used last.
The Pet Compendium and Settings buttons are at the top.
When your pet gets hungry
- When your pet drops below Happy, a big warning shows on screen: "Rex is content. Feed it."
- A small Feed button pops up just above your quest list. Click it to feed your pet. It goes away once your pet is happy again.
- When you have fewer than 10 pieces of food your pet will eat, you get a warning. It won't nag you again until you buy more.
Taming skills on tooltips
Hover over a beast you could tame. The tooltip shows what taming it would teach you, like "Bite (Rank 3)".
- Green means you already know it.
- Red means you don't.
Open your Beast Training window once so Pets can learn which skills you know.
When you tame a beast, Pets writes down what it taught you. Chat tells you, and the beast shows in the Compendium as one you tamed.
The Pet Compendium
The Compendium lists every beast a hunter can tame.
Finding a beast
- Pick a family from the Family list, like Wolf or Cat.
- Type in the search box to find a beast by name, zone or skill.
-
Tick boxes narrow the list:
- Tameable now: only beasts at or below your level.
- Rares only: only rare beasts.
- Teaches me something new: only beasts with a skill you don't have.
- Seen on Forever: only beasts known to live on WoW: Forever.
The columns
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Beast | Its name. Rare and elite beasts are marked |
| Family | Wolf, Cat, Bear and so on |
| Level | Its level. Red means it's above you |
| Speed | Seconds between its attacks. Lower is faster. Green is fast |
| Where | The zone and spot where it lives |
| Teaches | The skills it teaches. Green you know, red you don't |
Click a heading to sort by it. Click again to flip the order. Click a third time to go back to A to Z.
Clicking a beast
- Click a beast to put a pin on your map where it lives.
- Shift-click a beast to point the beast arrow at it.
- Hover over a beast to see more, like what it eats and how long it takes to come back.
The beast arrow
The beast arrow is a gold compass that points to the beast you picked. It's off until you turn it on.
- Shift-click a beast in the Compendium to aim it. Or click Arrow at the top of the Compendium.
- It shows how far away the beast is. It says "You're there" when you're close.
- Click the arrow to open the Compendium. Drag it to move it.
- Click its red gem to hide it.
- When you tame the beast, the arrow puts itself away.
- If you use TomTom, TomTom's arrow shows the way instead.
Only one Blackthornes arrow shows at a time. The one you aimed last wins.
Key bindings
Pets adds two keys you can set. Go to Options, then Keybindings, then AddOns, and look for Blackthornes Pets.
Pet care does the right thing with one press:
- No pet out: it calls your pet.
- Pet is dead: it revives it.
- In a fight: it casts Mend Pet.
- Out of a fight: it feeds your pet.
- Warlocks: it summons the last demon you used.
Dismiss pet sends your pet away. Hunters only.

Good to know
- The Feed buttons hide during a fight. Your pet can't eat in combat anyway.
- Pets won't feed food that's 30 or more levels below your pet.
- Speed matters. A pet keeps the attack speed of the beast you tamed, so check the Speed column before you tame.
- Pets works with the other Blackthornes addons. Only one Blackthornes arrow shows at a time.
